Some people living in the Melakadida Refugee Camp spend their time away from their shelters, working or carrying out daily tasks; you can see many of them carrying a plastic water container wrapped in a hand-woven decorative garment. As they explained, this wet cloth keeps the water fresher in the heat of the desert, and it is a well-known technique used by the people living in this environment. The colorful traditional braided fabric that keeps the water containers cool is made from reused clothes and it’s locally crafted. This sustainable and simple cooling system with traditional techniques and reused materials it’s practical and decorative at the same time.
